Look at it this way:
Check pH first to see if acid or alkaline. acid 7.35-7.45 alkaline
Then check
PaCo2 (Carbon Dioxide - Lungs) and
HCo3 (Bicarbonate - Kidneys)
to see the trend that matches the pH.
For example: If
pH is acid and
PaCo2 is acid (increased levels of carbon dioxide) and
HCo3 is WNL
= Resp acidosis.
If:
pH is acid and
PaCo2 is WNL and
HCo3 is acid (decrease of bicarb)
= Metabolic acidosis
