Nursing 2, Exam 2
Pain Study Guide
1. The most common alternative health practice people admit to is prayer, which is practiced by 2/3 of those in many interviews. Which leads us to the effects of spirituality on health. How will you help meet the spiritual needs of your clients?
2. Consider and define pain. Use information from the text, lecture, and your personal experiences.
3. Use the steps of the Nursing Process to manage pain. How will you assess, construct nursing diagnosis, plan, implement, and evaluate your success with pain management?
4. What are side effects of common pain medications? (hint, have a drug guide on hand)
5. Develop and demonstrate an understanding of tolerance, addiction, and dependence on pain medication.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of patient teaching about pain control.
7. Understand how adjuvant drugs enhance the actions of pain medications.
8. Review non-pharmacological methods of pain control. These are within the scope of Nursing practice, for the most part, and can be performed independent of physician’s orders. How do these modalities work?
9. Describe the role that stress plays in perception and treatment of pain.
10. How about those herbs? How should the client be taking them? How can they select the best herbal preparations?
11. How safe are complimentary and alternative therapies? What are the advantages and disadvantages of these treatment modalities?
12. In your role as a professional nurse, you are a provider of care, manager of care, advocate, counselor, member of the profession. Within these roles, how do you effectively manage the pain of your clients?
Thanks Rupert! By the way, what program did you use to upload Shelba's file?
